Law enforcement lays abandoned newborn to rest in Placer County

Several members of the Placer County law enforcement community conducted a funeral service Wednesday for a newborn boy found in a trash bag over the summer.

The mother of the child has not been found despite efforts by the Placer County Sheriff's office. The body was found June 21 along a Newcastle roadway.

Sheriff's department staff and the county chaplaincy said they wanted to give the child a decent burial despite the circumstances of his death. He was buried in the baby section of the New Auburn Cemetery.

The body was discovered after a woman walking along an undeveloped subdivision alerted authorities to a foul odor coming from a pile of garbage.

The department had not previously alerted the media of the search for the boy's mother.
Tips on the identity of the baby's mother can be phoned in at (530) 889-7800 or tipsters can remain anonymous by calling 1-800-923-8191. Tips leading to an arrest are eligible of a reward of $1,000.
