QUESTION: In April 2011, Teresa Hess was killed by a vehicle while crossing Laguna Boulevard in Elk Grove. What was the final result of that investigation?
Submitted by: Katt, Elk Grove
ANSWER: Teresa Hess, 54, died April 5, 2011, of injuries suffered a day earlier when she was struck by a pickup truck as she jogged about 8 a.m. across Laguna Boulevard.
Hess had stepped off the curb on Laguna Boulevard near Laguna Park Drive when she was struck by the vehicle. The 32-year-old driver, identified by an Elk Grove police spokesman as James Sanders, was eastbound on Laguna Boulevard. Sanders' 7-year-old daughter was also in the truck.
A police investigation determined that Sanders ran a red light, and that the light had been red for several seconds when the pickup entered the intersection.
According to Sacramento Superior Court online records, Sanders was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, without gross negligence. He pleaded no contest to the charge and was sentenced in August of this year to 90 days in a sheriff's work project and three years probation.
