Bashay Edward Jorgenson, 32, described by police as a transient, was arrested on battery and attempted robbery charges in connection with the incident that sent a woman to the hospital.
Police said they responded to the area of 390 Grass Valley Highway about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a fight. The injured woman and a man said that Jorgenson punched them when he tried to steal their sleeping bags.
The woman suffered facial cuts and had to be transported by ambulance to Auburn Faith Hospital. The man declined treatment.
The suspected assailant, Jorgenson, had fled before police arrived.
Police officer Stan Hamelin later found Jorgenson on F Street in the DeWitt Center. Jorgenson was taken into custody without incident and was booked early today into Placer County Jail on $50,000 bail.
