Coroner IDs suspect killed in alleged Pocket-area home-invasion

The man who was fatally shot Saturday morning as he allegedly tried to break into a Pocket area home has been identified as 31-year-old Joseph Merjil.

Sacramento police allege that Merjil and other suspects attempted to rob a homeowner on Haven Court about 3:30 a.m. Gunfire was exchanged between the two sides, and Merjil was fatally injured.

Three other people, including the homeowner, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Arrested in the aftermath of the shooting was 21-year-old Thomas Ordonaz. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and being an accessory after the fact, according to Sacramento police.

Police have not disclosed how many suspects were involved in the home-invasion or whether there are any suspects outstanding.
