Sacramento City Manager John Shirey announced the appointment today. Schiele, who has served as deputy chief, will assume the duties of acting chief Dec. 29, when Chief Rick Braziel retires. He will continue in the post until a new chief is selected.
Schiele has not applied for the permanent position of police chief, according to a department news release.
Schiele is a second generation Sacramento police officer and has held a wide variety of assignments. Prior to his assignment as deputy chief in the Office of Investigations, he spent five years as commander of the Joseph E. Rooney Police facility.
He has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice management and has attended the Federal Bureau of Investigatin National Academy and Califronia Peace Office Standards and Training Command College.
