The identity of the armed robber shot and killed Saturday by Sacramento police during a hostage situation at a fast food restaurant was released by the county coroner's office Sunday.

The gunman was identified as Xang Khang, 26, of Sacramento.

After a tense standoff of more than three hours, he was shot by Sacramento officers at the Jack in the Box restaurant at 8349 Folsom Boulevard.

Two female hostages, both restaurant employees, escaped unharmed.

Police said Khang was armed with a handgun and attempted to rob the restaurant around 12:30 p.m. He then barricaded himself in the building with the two hostages, and reportedly threatened to kill them.

While officers evacuated the area around the College Greens Shopping Center restaurant, negotiators set up a perimeter and were able to make sporadic telephone contact with the suspect and hostages, said Sacramento police spokeswoman Michele Gigante.

"During these conversations, it was determined that the suspect would not release any hostages and that he had no intention of a peaceful surrender," police said in a press release.

Gigante said the suspect held the victims against their will and forced them around the interior of the restaurant at gunpoint. At one point during the standoff, the gunman used one hostage as a "human shield," while moving around the inside of the eatery, police said.

About 2:38 p.m., one hostage was able to escape and ran outside to awaiting officers.

The remaining hostage, a woman in her 20s, was in grave danger, police said.

"The experience this remaining hostage endured was traumatizing," Gigante said. "This would be any person's nightmare. She showed strength through sporadic, unpredictable behavior by the gunman. She is a strong survivor. He did point his gun at the hostages numerous times during the standoff."

At about 3:45 p.m., sharpshooters with the police SWAT fired at the suspect from positions on Folsom Boulevard, while detonating three concussion grenades inside the building. Immediately after wounding the suspect, the hostage ran from the restaurant, while officers disarmed the suspect and called for medical aid.

Khang was transported to a local hospital where he died Saturday night.
