In 2006, Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies began investigating allegations that Michael Joseph Chavez, 33, sexually molested two girls under the age of 14 years old. Chavez disappeared and could not be found for several years, according to the sheriff's department.
Working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, deputies learned that Chavez was outside the United States. In March 2011, detectives in the Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau got a tip that Chavez was living just outside Mexico City.
Sacramento County, federal and Mexican authorities began a search to find his exact whereabouts. On Dec. 13, Chavez was taken into custody in Cancun.
He was extradited to Houston,Texas where Sacramento County detectives took custody and returned him to Sacramento.
