A 31-year-old man who called 911 Sunday to report that his uncle had been shot and killed in the driveway of his Herald home was arrested tonight on suspicion of murder.
Jerry King was taken into custody shortly after 6:30 p.m. by detectives from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Major Crime Bureau. Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jason Ramos said King is being interviewed by investigators and will be booked into the county's main jail.
Deputies responded to a residence in the 13000 block of Purvis Road in Herald shortly before 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The caller, later identified as King, said that someone had been shot in the driveway of the home. When deputies arrived, they found a 50-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his chest lying in the driveway outside the house. He was pronounced dead by paramedics.
King, a resident of the home, said he was inside the residence when he heard a gunshot from outside. He then looked out and saw his uncle, who was visiting from out of town, lying in the driveway. No suspect information was provided and there were no witnesses to the shooting.
Ramos said homicide detectives worked into the night and the next day investigating the scene. Just before dusk Monday, a sheriff's K-9 unit located a firearm hidden among brush and plant matter at the rear of the residence. Ramos said detectives believe it was the firearm used in the shooting.
Investigators also learned that the relationship between King and his uncle was strained.
Ramos said there are no other suspects in the case.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, the Sacramento County Coroner's Office had not released the name of the victim. A spokeswoman said some relatives still had not been notified of the man's death.
