Citrus Heights police officials have released new information about the confrontation that led an officer to fatally shoot a suspected car thief.
About 2 a.m. Thursday, police responded to the 8000 block of Debbie Ann Court after a report of a car burglary in progress by two suspects.
According to updated information from the Police Department, the first officer to arrive on scene located one of the suspects, who, in a confrontation with the officer, ignored officer's commands to show his hands.
The suspect then jumped in a vehicle and was "aggressively reaching for something while inside the vehicle in a way that led the officer to believe the suspect was reaching for a weapon," police said. Fearing for his safety, the officer then shot the suspect.
Police said officers investigating the scene "edged weapons" in the area where the suspect had been reaching.
Fatally shot was 20-year-old Hunter Jacob Todd. His alleged accomplice, 36-year-old Richard Martin Duran, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted car theft, burglary of a car and possession of burglary tools. He also had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, one for possession of burglary tools and another for a traffic matter, according to police.
