A 21-year-old man who died Monday afternoon in a collision after leading police on a short chase has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office as Sage A. Lopez of Sacramento.
Lopez, who Sacramento police said was driving a stolen Honda, died when he reportedly ran a stop sign on Clay Street at El Camino Avenue in North Sacramento and was struck by a vehicle traveling west on El Camino.
Police spokeswoman Officer Michele Gigante said officers were on patrol in the area of Acacia Avenue and Belden Street at 12:37 p.m. Monday when they spotted a white Honda traveling in the opposite direction. Officers ran the license plate number and learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen.
The officers turned around and attempted to stop the Honda, but the driver failed to pull over and turned south onto Clay Street with police in pursuit. Seconds later, as the Honda crossed the intersection of Clay and El Camino, it collided with the westbound vehicle.
Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said a man and woman were in the other vehicle. One sustained minor injury, but neither was transported to the hospital, police said.
