With preliminary site preparations completed, the excavation process begins Thursday of a well in Linden in a search for remains belonging to victims of two San Joaquin County killers.
The excavation operation of the dirt-filled well is expected to take days, if not weeks.
Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel and drilling experts began working at the well on Jan. 7 in a search for the victims of serial killers Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog.
The experts still don't exactly know the depth of the well, despite using a bore and camera. The excavating of the well will be done by hand.
Excavated dirt will be moved to an area for sifting. If remains are encountered during sifting or excavation, the process will stop to figure out how to best recover remains, according to an FBI press release.
