Auburn police officer Stan Hamelin was patrolling Old Town Auburn in the early morning hours on Tuesday when he saw Peter Paul Cassidy, 65, (pictured) working on a 1987 Jeep Cherokee in a parking lot.

Hamelin conducted a records check on the vehicle and discovered it was reported stolen from an owner in Nevada. Cassidy was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft.

A search also turned up credit cards belonging to the registered owner of the Cherokee and a phony $100 bill. Cassidy was also booked for being in possession of stolen credit cards and forgery.
