Rancho Cordova police and Sacramento County East Division sheriff's deputies will become a larger presence in some schools through a bonding program now underway.
The "Adopt-A-School" program endeavors to strengthen ties between law enforcement, schools and the community. The effort, which began last week, focuses on 19 schools.
Officers will be making stops during regular patrol duties to visit campuses. They will attempt to cultivate working relationships with students, teachers, classified staff and principals, according to a Rancho Cordova police press release.
In addition, officers will conduct presentations about the role of the police officer, emphasize the importance of class work and stress the importance of staying away from drugs and crime.
The program supplements the police presence at schools that already have School Resource Officers. Other responsibilities of officers in the Adopt-A-School program may include assisting school staff in counseling sessions and serving as mentors to students.
Schools involved in the program include Cordova Gardens, Cordova Meadows, Cordova Villa, Navigator, Peter J. Shields, Rancho Cordova Elementary, White Rock, Williamson, Sunrise, A.M. Winn, Abraham Lincoln, Mather Heights, Sierra Enterprise, James W. Marshall, Sequoia, Isador Cohen, Golden Empire, Gold River Discovery and O.W. Erlewine.
