Security camera photos released to the media last week have led to a tip and then arrest of a man suspected of robbing two banks.
Last week, two U.S. Bank branches inside Safeway supermarkets were robbed. In both cases, the robber presented a note demanding money. He left with cash in both instances.
The robberies occurred Jan. 22 at the Safeway, 989 Sunrise Ave., and three days later at the Safeway at 9045 Woodcreek Oaks Blvd.
After the first bank robbery, photos of the robber were released to the media. Roseville police detectives got a tip from a citizen who saw the photos and recognized the robber.
With the information, detectives had a suspect in the holdup of both banks.
This morning, at 1:42 a.m., a Rocklin police officer on patrol ran the plate on a car near Sierra College Boulevard. It came back stolen and connected to the bank robbery suspect.
The Rocklin police officer arrested the driver, Randy Wesley Penny, 31, of Antelope without incident. Roseville detectives booked Penny into Placer County Jail on suspicion of robbery and vehicle theft.
Detectives will recommend that Roseville Crime Stoppers tip program give the anonymous tipster a cash reward.
