Sacramento County's long-standing district attorney, Jan Scully, announced today she will not seek re-election next year, ending a 34-year career in the office.
Scully was first elected in 1994. Before that, she had served as a deputy district attorney for 15 years.
In an email to her staff, Scully wrote that her emotions are mixed; that the office has been her "second family/home" but that she is looking forward to a new chapter in her life.
She also laid out a list of goals for her remaining two years at the helm of the organization, including cultivating a future leadership team, seeing a proposed regional family justice center come to fruition and restoring positions and programs as funding becomes available. Among the programs she mentioned were the reviews of officer-involved shootings, a practice Scully ended last summer because of budget cuts.
"I cannot find adequate words to express the pride and love I have for our office and for all of you, my DA family," she wrote to her staff. "I am so proud of the work we have done and will continue to do together to make our community safe."
