Sacramento police arrested a man in Del Paso Heights on Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly brandished a large knife at several people, including a Grant High School student walking home from the campus.
Shortly before 5 p.m., police responded to the 500 block of Morey Avenue after receiving multiple calls of a person walking with a large knife. Officers several times ordered the man to drop the knife, and the man eventually complied.
The man, later identified by Sacramento police as 42-year-old Tom Daves, was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a knife and violating the terms of his probation.
Daves is being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail in lieu of $170,000 bail, according to booking records.
The incident prompted Grant High officials to send a letter home to families alerting them to the incident. The letter indicates the student was approached by a man who brandished a knife and appeared to be intoxicated. The student was not injured.
"Let me assure you that the safety of our students is our top concern on and off campus. We take this incident very seriously, and we're asking for your help in addressing the important issue of student safety," Principal Craig Murray wrote in the letter. "Please remind your children to always be cautious and aware of their surroundings as they walk to and from school, and the importance of reporting suspicious activities, threats or disturbing information to you or a trusted adult."
