A Citrus Heights police officer shot and killed a suspected thief this morning.
Suspicious activity was reported about 2 a.m. in the vicinity of Debbie Ann Court and Glen Alta Way, police said. A caller to the police department said that two men drove into the neighborhood and got out of their vehicle.
One man, wearing a hooded sweatshirt, got out and entered another vehicle two houses away from the caller. The reporting party did not recognize man in the hoodie nor the vehicle he arrived in.
The caller believed the two men were committing a crime, police said.
An officer arrived a short time later to the neighborhood near Sunrise Boulevard and Old Auburn Road.
"Officers contacted one of the suspects and some type of confrontation ensued. The officer feared for his life and that is when the officer shot the suspect," said police spokesman Officer Bryan Fritsch.
Fritsch would not say if the suspect was armed.
The officer rendered medical aid before the injured man was transported to a hospital where he was declared dead.
The other man was found nearby the shooting scene in a vehicle that did not belong to him. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted auto theft.
The names of the dead man and the arrested man were not released. Fritch said it is suspected that both men arrived at the location in a car with the intent to either burglarize or steal a vehicle.
No officers were injured.
