The alleged burglars, identified by Elk Grove police as Arturo Martinez (left photo) and Moises Malava (right photo) were taken into custody without incident about 9:45 a.m. at a home in the 3500 block of 24th Avenue.

SWAT officers conducted a search in the Oak Park neighborhood before finding the suspected vehicle burglars.

The theft occurred about 6 a.m. in Elk Grove in the 9200 block of Franklin Boulevard. A vehicle at an apartment complex was broken into by two people, one of the culprits acting as a lookout.

Police initially were told that the thieves took a .25-caliber handgun and ammunition.

An off-duty officer spotted the getaway vehicle later on Interstate 5. The California Highway Patrol attempted a vehicle stop on South Land Park Drive but the suspects did not pull over.

Eventually, the suspects stopped near 23rd Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard where officers surrounded the area. The ammunition was recovered but the handgun was still believed to be missing.

Later, after the men were taken into custody, the owner of the burglarized vehicle found the gun in his home. It had never been taken.
