Teenager arrested in fatal shooting in Rancho Cordova

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the death of a man found in a vehicle in Rancho Cordova last week with a gunshot wound.

The suspect was taken into custody near the scene of the crime earlier today and was booked into Sacramento County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder, according to a Sheriff's Department news release. Authorities did not release the youth's name because he is a juvenile.

Shortly before 8 a.m. Jan. 2, Rancho Cordova police officers responded to the area of White Rock Road near Laurel Crest Drive regarding a report of an unresponsive man inside a vehicle. They found 29-year-old Lucas Esteban-Enrique, who had been shot while driving down the street. He was transported to a hospital, where he died the following evening.

An investigation led to identification of the 17-year-old suspect. Authorities said he is known to have associations with a criminal street gang, which is believed to have been the motive for the crime. Detectives seek to identify a second person who was with this suspect at the time of the shooting. He is described only as an African American male who was wearing dark clothing at the time.

Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (916) 874-5115. Tips also may be left anonymously at www.sacsheriff.com, by texting to 274637 and entering the keyword SSD, or by calling (916) 874-8477.
