A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the death of a man found in a vehicle in Rancho Cordova last week with a gunshot wound.
The suspect was taken into custody near the scene of the crime earlier today and was booked into Sacramento County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder, according to a Sheriff's Department news release. Authorities did not release the youth's name because he is a juvenile.
Shortly before 8 a.m. Jan. 2, Rancho Cordova police officers responded to the area of White Rock Road near Laurel Crest Drive regarding a report of an unresponsive man inside a vehicle. They found 29-year-old Lucas Esteban-Enrique, who had been shot while driving down the street. He was transported to a hospital, where he died the following evening.
An investigation led to identification of the 17-year-old suspect. Authorities said he is known to have associations with a criminal street gang, which is believed to have been the motive for the crime. Detectives seek to identify a second person who was with this suspect at the time of the shooting. He is described only as an African American male who was wearing dark clothing at the time.
