Two who killed gambler sentenced to life in prison

Two convicted murderers who tortured and killed a man in a failed effort to rob him of his gambling winnings were sentenced today to life terms in prison with no chance of parole.

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Maryanne G. Gilliard imposed the terms on Derrick Sam, 34, and Shannon Shorter, 36, for the Dec. 19, 2008, shooting death fo Timothy Lance Brodie in Rancho Cordova.

According to testimony at trial, the defendants were after the $16,000 that Brodie reportedly had won at a local Indian casino.

Along with the life without parole term, the judge gave each of the defendants additional 7 years-to-life sentences for torture and another 11 years and four months for robbery.

A third defendant, Gennel Edward MIles, 30, has hired a new lawyer and is seeking a new trial. Gilliard rescheduled his hearing for Feb. 15.
