Update: UC Davis researcher hurt after explosion rocks campus apartment

A UC Davis researcher suffered an injury after an explosion rocked a campus apartment early this morning, the university said.

The researcher, whose name school officials declined to release, checked into a local hospital for treatment of hand injuries around 1:30 a.m, according to UC Davis spokesman Andy Fell. The hospital then notified police.

When police arrived at the apartment, located in the 400 block of Russell Park, Fell said they found chemicals and cordoned off the area.

Fell declined to speculate on what the researcher was doing, but said the only safe place for research to be conducted is in university laboratories.
