West Sacramento store evacuated during search for armed suspect

A Raley's supermarket in West Sacramento was evacuated for about 30 minutes this afternoon while police searched for a woman believed to be inside with a gun.

Police spokesman Lt. Tod Sockman said the incident occurred around noon after a truck driver reported that a woman with whom he had had contact at Jefferson Boulevard and West Capitol Avenue had stolen his gun and run away. He reported the theft to the California Highway Patrol, which then contacted the Police Department.

An officer spotted the woman in front of the Raley's store on West Capitol Avenue. and saw her go inside. Believing that she was armed, police evacuated the store while they searched for her.

Sockman said they located the 31-year-old woman, who the truck driver identified from a photo lineup. She did not have the gun when she was taken into custody and police are searching for the weapon.

Sockman said the woman will be booked into Yolo County Jail on suspicion of stealing the firearm.
