A woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition this morning following a kitchen fire at an Arden Arcade residence.
Sacramento Metropolitan fire crews responded to the 2800 block of Joseph Avenue at 8:48 a.m. The first units to arrive reported heavy smoke coming from the front door and began to fight the fire while searching for victims. A man was helped out of the house, and a woman was located in a back bedroom, according to a Fire District news release.
The woman had suffered burns and was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center's burn unit. The man was not injured.
District spokesman Engineer J.B. Lee said the cause of the fire has not been determined, explaining that because of the severity of the woman's injuries, investigators had not been able to talk with her. He said the fire was quickly extinguished and was confined to the kitchen.
Fire crews reported that there were no working smoke detectors in the house.
