Woman shot after resisting attempted purse snatching

A woman was shot late Friday night in midtown Sacramento after she resisted a man who tried to steal her purse.

The victim, a 33-year-old woman whose name was not released by Sacramento police, was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to her upper body. Her condition was not available.

The incident began just after 10:30 p.m. Friday when the woman stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. She was standing on the steps of an apartment building in the 800 block of 27th Street when a man approached and grabbed her purse.

The woman did not give up the purse, holding on to it and pulling back.

"That's when she was shot," said Officer Michele Gigante, a police spokeswoman.

Gigante said the woman described her assailant as a Hispanic male in his early 20s, 5 foot 9 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds with a goatee and wearing a long-sleeve red shirt and blue jeans.
