QUESTION: Was anyone arrested in the shooting death of a toddler riding in the back seat of his father's car on July 4, 2012?
Submitted by: Momma of 4, Sacramento
ANSWER: Three suspects, two of them teenagers, turned themselves in within days of the shooting, after the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department publicized their names and photos.
Eric Minjares and Marcus Weber were age 17 and 16, respectively, at the time of the July 4 shooting at Loucreta and Palmer House drives, in the unincorporated area of south Sacramento, that killed 3-year-old Jorge Azios III. They are accused of being the gunmen and have been charged as adults.
Also arrested was Gabriel Angel Quintero, 20.
All three are awaiting trial on one count of murder in the death of the child, a count of attempting to kill the youngster's father, Jorge Azios Jr., and a third count of shooting into an occupied vehicle.
Their next court date is Feb. 15, according to Sacramento Superior Court online records.
Sheriff's officials have said the gunmen fired more than a dozen rounds, but it is believed the child was struck accidentally.
Investigators have not disclosed a motive for the shooting, or whether Jorge Azios Jr., who was driving someone else's car, was the target or was mistaken for another person.
