UPDATE: Southbound I-5 reopens following big-rig crash in Elk Grove

Southbund Interstate 5 through Elk Grove has reopened following a nearly three-hour closure after a big-rig truck and trailer overturned north of Laguna Boulevard early this afternoon.

The truck with a 53-foot trailer loaded with PVC piping supplies for pools overturned about 2 p.m. Initial statements from witnesses indicated that the big rig was traveling in the slow lane when it drifted toward the center lane, then back toward the roadway shoulder, according to a CHP news release. The truck and trailer both overturned, blocking all three lanes of southbound I-5.

Although it was raining when the collision occurred, it has not been determined whether weather was a factor, officials said.

The 54-year-old driver, whose address was listed as Stockton, suffered cuts and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
