CHP offers 'Start Smart' traffic safety class for teenage drivers

The California Highway Patrol is offering a traffic safety class for teenage drivers and their parents or guardians.

The "Start Smart" program targets new or soon-to-be-licensed drivers 15 to 19 years old. The class is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. March 13 at the CHP Valley Division office at 2555 First Ave., Sacramento

The class will cover collision avoidance techniques, driver responsibility, collision trends, distracted driving laws, alcohol-related driving laws and the provisional license process. It will incorporate videos and classroom discussion, and participants will have an opportunity to ask questions of CHP officers.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend the class with their teen driver. Registration is required, and space is limited. To sign up for the class, call (916) 731-6300.

Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
