Coroner IDs man shot during alleged robbery attempt at Rosemont store

The man fatally shot by a Rosemont store employee during an alleged robbery attempt has been identified as 30-year-old Derick Hunter of Citrus Heights, according to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.

Hunter was shot after allegedly walking into a Metro PCS store on Folsom Boulevard, armed, about 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Two employees were in the store at the time, and one of them shot Hunter, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

The employee then left the gun on the counter, waited for authorities outside and told investigators he shot the man during a robbery attempt. Based on an initial investigation, sheriff's deputies believe the shooting was justifiable and both employees were released after questioning.

The District Attorney's office will make the final determination whether any charges will be filed against the shooter.
