The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced today that no human remains were found during a more than monthlong excavation of an abandoned well site in Linden.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Herb Brown said during a news conference that investigators had reached out to Wesley Shermantine as recently as this week in an effort to locate the remains of victims of Shermantine and fellow convicted murderer Loren Herzog. Brown said Shermatine, through an attorney, refused to cooperate.
Shermantine pointed investigators to the most recent dig site.
"I think he tells us information based on his convenience," Brown said.
He said the FBI will sit down with Shermantine "anywhere, at any given time" if he provides information on other sites. But Brown said the FBI has no plans to dig anywhere else unless Shermantine provides information that can be corroborated by other means.
The most recent excavation began in early January on private agricultural land off Flood Road. The well had been filled in more than 20 years ago.
This was the second well to be excavated along Flood Road between Escalon Bellota and Waverly roads. More than a year ago, the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office excavated a well on an adjacent parcel, recovering the remains of three females and a fetus.
