Three Meadowview schools were placed on lockdown this morning after a prank caller reported a shooting in the area, according to Sacramento police.
The report was determined to be unfounded and police have lifted the lockdowns at Luther Burbank High School, Rosa Parks Middle School and Mark Hopkins Elementary.
Sacramento police Officer Doug Morse confirmed the call appears to be a hoax played by a child. Police are still trying to identify and locate that caller, who told dispatchers there had been a shooting near one of the three schools, Morse said. The other two schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
The call drew a large police response, including from outside agencies, before officers determined a shooting had not taken place. Morse described the hoax as a serious offense and that the caller could face charges of making a false police report.
"Law enforcement, teachers and parents alike are all very aware of the recent gun violence," Morse said. "Situations and reports like these are taken very seriously."
