Sacramento homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 62-year-old man who was shot during a robbery in Oak Park almost 36 years ago.
Walter Johnson died in a local hospital Monday as the result of medical complications traced back to paralysis he suffered when he was shot in April 1977, said police spokeswoman Officer Michele Gigante.
At 3:48 a.m. on April 9, 1977, Johnson was sitting in his car parked on San Carlos Way near 13th Avenue when a red or brown Ford Pinto stopped in the roadway, Gigante said.
Three unknown suspects got out of the car and confronted Johnson. The suspects struggled with the victim, and when he tried to get out of the car one of the suspects shot him, Gigante said.
The suspects robbed the victim, then drove away, Gigante said.
Sacramento police robbery detectives at the time gathered evidence, pursued leads and investigated one person of interest, but ultimately did not identify any suspects. Homicide detectives have now taken over the case.
