South Lake Tahoe police identify pedestrian struck by SUV

A pedestrian who died Friday evening after he was struck by a vehicle in South Lake Tahoe has been identified by police as John Carleton, 51, a local resident.

Officers responded about 6:45 p.m. to 2681 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Police said Carleton was crossing the street when he was struck by an SUV. He was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to a Police Department news release.

The driver of the SUV, Gregory Stearns, 49, also of South Lake Tahoe, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol with a suspended license.

Police said the cause of the collision remains under investigation pending autopsy results.
