Teens arrested after guns found at two Natomas Unified schools

Police credit alert school employees with the arrest of two teenage boys after loaded guns were found today at two schools in the Natomas Unified School District.

The two incidents, one at Discovery High School and the other at Natomas Middle School, do not appear to be related, said Sacramento police spokeswoman Officer Michele Gigante.

Officers were called to Discovery High School, a continuation school at 3400 Fong Ranch Road, about 10:10 a.m. Gigante said a 16-year-old student had been called to the principal's office on an administrative matter. Before he went to the office, he dropped off his backpack in the library. That attracted the attention of a school employee, who checked the backpack and found a loaded handgun.

Gigante said the youth cooperated with police. He was booked into juvenile hall, accused of gun-related offenses. Gigante said she did not know who owned the gun.

The second incident about a half-hour later at Natomas Middle School, 3200 North Park Drive.

Gigante said a teacher's assistant was rummaging through an outdoor trash bin looking for recyclables and found the loaded handgun.

Later, the principal saw a student hanging around the bin and confronted him. An investigation determined the 14-year-old boy was responsible for the gun, which Gigante said had been stolen.

The 14-year-old also was booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of gun-related offenses.
