QUESTION: What is happening with Matthew Riley's appeal? He was convicted of murdering both his parents.
Submitted by: Mark, Sacramento
ANSWER: According to online court records, Matthew David Riley filed a notice of appeal Jan. 9, 2012, three days after he was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for the stabbing deaths of his parents.
A Sacramento County jury in October 2011 convicted Riley of first-degree murder with special circumstance.
The case remains in the 3rd District Court of Appeal in Sacramento, and Riley, 35, is at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione.
It was Riley who reported discovering the bodies of his parents, Steven Riley, 54, and Linda Riley, 53, at their home on Paddle Wheel Court in the Natomas area on Dec.9, 2008. Police and prosecutors said Riley had doubled back to the house after killing the couple.
Investigators theorized that Riley killed his parents because they were reluctant to let him move in with them during the breakup of his marriage.
