Death of inmate reported at Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center

A 33-year-old man has died while in custody at Sacramento County's Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center.

The man had been in custody since March 11 following a violation of parole, according to a Sacramento County Sheriff's Department news release.

About 8:40 a.m. today, the man was found unresponsive in his cell. Custody staff members notified emergency medical personnel and attempted life-saving measures on the victim until paramedics from outside the facility arrived. Efforts to revive the man failed, and he was pronounced dead inside the correctional facility by emergency medical personnel, officials said.

Authorities said the man had been housed alone in his cell and showed no signs of physical trauma. His name was not released pending notification of family.

The Sheriff's Department announced that it will conduct an inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state law. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death and forward the findings as prescribed by law.
