Placerville inmate collapses in jail yard, dies at hospital

An El Dorado County jail inmate collapsed while exercising Friday evening in an outdoor recreation yard and died at a nearby hospital, said El Dorado County sheriff's deputies.

James Thomas Clark, 53, from West Sacramento, collapsed while in the yard about 8 p.m., officials said. Correctional officers immediately started CPR, and Clark was transported to Marshall Hospital in Placerville, where he was pronounced dead.

He never regained consciousness, sheriff's officials said.

There were no obvious signs of foul play, sheriff's reports said.

The incident is being investigated by the Sheriff's Office and the El Dorado County District Attorney's office.
