A man died after reportedly being in a fight in midtown Sacramento in early Sunday, Sacramento police said.
Police responded to 18th and P streets about 12:45 a.m., after receiving reports of a bleeding person. Officers found a man in his 20s on the ground at the corner, with witnesses administering CPR.
Police believe the injured man was drunk and got involved in a fight with three other adult males near the sidewalk on 18th Street, said Officer Michele Gigante. During the incident, he sustained traumatic injuries to his head, and a bystander called police, she said.
Police officers took over administering CPR until medics arrived, and the man was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Detectives are describing this as a homicide investigation, Gigante said. They are currently reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses to identify the subjects involved in the fight.
"This was an argument that turned physical," Gigante said. "There were three other people involved, and we would like for them to come forward."
It's unknown what caused the fight, she said.
Detectives believe there were several witnesses to the fight, and ask anyone with information to notify police at (916) 264-5471 or at Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357.) Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
