Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were called to the Raley's shopping center shortly after noon. An elderly couple had been parking their vehicle in front of the building when the vehicle accelerated and crashed through the glass front of one shop, through the wall of a vacant unit and then into a third unit, according to a fire district news release. The SUV came to rest with its front end inside Rims Deli.
Although the three commercial units suffered significant damage, no one was seriously hurt, according to fire officials. Fire crews treated the driver and passenger for minor injuries.
Customers and employees inside the two open businesses heard the SUV crash through the walls, but no one was directly in the vehicle's path. An unoccupied dining table in the deli was at the spot where the vehicle broke through the wall, fire officials reported.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
Metro fire crews evaluated the damage and determined the building was structurally sound. They worked with a private firm to board up and strengthen the walls, cover holes and clean up debris. Fire officials reported that the deli was able to continue serving. customers.
