A mother and daughter have pleaded guilty in a series of burglaries committed in the Sacramento area during January.
Helen Costello, 43, and Shirley Costello, 22, pleaded guilty today to five counts of residential burglary as serious and violent felonies, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney's Office news release. They entered the pleas before Sacramento Superior Court Judge Michael Sweet. Each is to be sentenced to eight years in prison April 12.
The women engaged in a series of residential burglaries during January. Their targets were elderly victims in the Tahoe Park, Meadowview and Arden Arcade areas, authorities said. They approached victims and claimed to be their former neighbors, or said they were interested in buying a home or used automobile in the area. The women often asked to use the victim's bathroom. Once inside the residence, one of the women distracted the victim while the other searched for valuables.
Sacramento police arrested the Costellos after a burglary Jan. 21.
Authorities suspect the women may have victimized other people in Sacramento County. Anyone with information regarding similar burglaries is asked to call the Sacramento Police Department's non-emergency line at (916) 264-5471.
