Sac Metro Fire rescues woman from burning apartment

fire.JPGA Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crew was able to enter a burning apartment through windows Thursday and rescue a person who was trapped inside.

Metro Fire was dispatched to the apartment house in the 5800 block of Sunrise Vista Drive near Greenback Lane and Fair Oaks Boulevard after a citizen reported flames and smoke from an apartment. The report also indicated that a person was trapped.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy fire and smoke coming from a downstairs apartment, according Fire Capt. Kim Fong. Firefighters immediately began to extinguish the fire with water, while other crews preformed a search technique that is high-risk, but effective in quickly finding trapped victims.

The so-called Vent Enter Search technique was begun through two back bedroom windows. Screens were removed and windows broken for crews to enter and rapidly search the residence without a hose line.

The technique gives someone trapped in a burning building the best chance of survival, according to Fong. The crews found a female in the apartment.

She was lifted out of the apartment through one of the bedroom windows. Later, she was taken to a burn center for treatment.

Her name and condition were not available this morning. Crews also recovered a dog and cat from the apartment, but they died.

Two families were displaced by the fire, but apartment management was able to move them into vacant units at the complex.

Metro Fire Arson investigators and the Citrus Heights Police Department are working on the fire investigation.
