Sacramento County sheriff's deputies are investigating a double shooting in the Foothill Farms area that left a woman dead and a man injured.
About 1:30 p.m., the Sheriff's Department received calls of multiple gunshots fired outside the Cambridge Park apartment complex in the 5800 block of Hamilton Street, near Palm Avenue and Hillsdale Boulevard.
The 30-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man, 31, who was in a wheelchair, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, said Sacramento County sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos.
Deputies have received reports of a possible third victim but they have not been able to confirm that, Ramos said.
The names of the victims have not been release. Ramos said the woman is believed to have been from out of town. He said it had not be determined whether the man in the wheelchair was a resident of the complex.
The victims were shot along the sidewalk and driveway within the large complex of two-story apartments. Evidence of at least a dozen gunshots were designated with yellow markers in the driveway. Ramos said at least one apartment also was struck by gunfire, but no one was inside the unit at the time.
He said the victims are not believed to have fired shots, but he would not say whether more than one shooter was involved.
Ramos said investigators had no definitive information regarding suspects, a suspect vehicle or motive for the shooting.
Residents from an apartment complex across the street reported hearing the gunshots. "I thought I was trippin'," said one man who declined to give his name. The man said he was accustomed to hearing gunfire when he lived in the Bay Area, but not in the Foothill Farms neighborhood.
Ramos said the Sheriff's Department receives few calls for service at the Cambridge Park apartments.
