Sacramento police promote eight new leaders

Sacramento police officials promoted eight officers to new leadership positions today, including a new deputy chief to fill the vacancy left by newly appointed Chief Sam Somers Jr.

That new deputy chief is Ken Bernard, formerly a captain who oversaw the city's central command.

Replacing him is newly promoted Capt. Bill Champion, who was leading the department's eastern division. He is replaced by Kevin Gardner, already a captain.

Also promoted were:

• Kathy Lester, a captain overseeing personnel

• Alisa Buckley, a lieutenant and watch commander in patrol

• Lt. Shawn Rogers, a lieutenant and watch commander in patrol

• Jason Contreras, an administrative officer in records

• Brent Kaneyuki, a sergeant in patrol

• Stephen Moore, a sergeant in patrol
