Sunrise Mall was evacuated Saturday afternoon, and the bomb squad was called in, after a suitcase was found sitting unattended in one of the walkways, Citrus Heights police said.
The suitcase turned out to be empty, and a 15-year-old girl was eventually taken into custody by police for intentionally causing the scare, according to police.
Sunrise Mall security officers saw the suitcase placed in the middle of a walkway in front of two stores at about 2:25 p.m. Mall security immediately notified Citrus Heights Police Department and evacuated the shopping center on Sunrise Boulevard.
The Sacramento County sheriff's department Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit investigated whether there was explosive material in the luggage and found the suitcase empty.
The teenager eventually came forward and claimed ownership of the suitcase, Citrus Heights police reports said. Officers said the girl placed the suitcase in the walkway with intent to cause fear and took her into custody.
