Bicyclist wearing earphones hit by truck in Yuba County

An unhelmeted bicyclist wearing earphones in Yuba County suffered major injuries when she turned into the path of an oncoming pickup despite the cries of her sister to watch out, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Brittany M. Bowers, 21, of Olivehurst was on a bicycle on a ride south on Garden Avenue approaching Arboga Road about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. While waiting for her sister and friend, she turned circles on the roadway, according to a CHP press release.

Bowers failed to hear her sister screaming that a truck was approaching. The driver saw the bicyclist but, as he approached, she turned into the path of his truck, according to the CHP.

Bowers suffered a broken leg, a lacerated liver and other injuries, according to the press release.
