Coroner's office identifies woman struck by freight train

A woman who died Friday afternoon when she was struck by a Union Pacific train has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office as 23-year-old Jennifer Oakes.

Oakes' community of residence was not listed on the coroner's website.

According to Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt, the accident occurred about 3 p.m. Friday south of Highway 50 near the Folsom Boulevard crossing, near California State University, Sacramento. The freight train was southbound when the woman was spotted standing on the tracks.

Hunt said the crew initiated the process to stop the train but was unable to bring it to a stop in time to avoid hitting the woman. He noted that a train typically travels about a mile before coming to a halt.

Oakes was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

The accident is being investigated by Union Pacific police.
