The El Dorado County Sheriff's Team of Active Retirees -- STAR -- is offering two programs to help residents improve home security when they are away from their residences and on vacation.
The STAR Unit offers training, literature and outlines to help residents establish Neighborhood Watch programs for their neighborhood. The unit also will provide a one-time presentation about the program to an interested street or neighborhood.
STAR will also provide vacation checks of homes when residents are on vacation. While on patrol, STAR volunteers stop by the home, check the perimeter and make sure that the residence is in good condition and hasn't been a victim of crime. If they find a problem, the volunteers alert sheriff's deputies so they can investigate. The house checks are offered at least twice a week to homeowners on vacation.
The vacation house checks and help in establishing Neighborhood Watch programs are available free of charge to anyone living in the unincorporated area of El Dorado County. To request services, or information about becoming a STAR volunteer, call the Placerville STAR office at (530) 621-7545, or the Tahoe office, (530) 573-3005.
