A three-alarm fire that destroyed a vacant commercial building on Watt Avenue in Sacramento on Sunday afternoon drew crowds of gawkers after it sent up tremendous plumes of black smoke that could be seen for miles.
A passer-by reported smoke coming from a former sporting goods store -- Adventure Sports -- near the busy intersection of Watt and Arden avenues at about about 1 p.m. Sunday, Sacramento Metro Fire Department spokesman Rashawn Fulcher said at the scene.
Officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Nobody was reported injured.
The fire department responded with more than "95 firefighters and 34 pieces of equipment," Fulcher said. The fire was contained at about 2 p.m.
"As of now, we are in defensive operation," Fulcher said Sunday afternoon, pointing to several fire hoses trained on the building. Firefighters and investigators would enter the structure when it was deemed safe to do so, Fulcher said.
Many people from nearby neighborhoods walked over to a middle school across the street to watch firefighters extinguish the fire.
