Foresthill man charged following mail theft investigation

A federal grand jury has charged a Foresthill man with being a felon in possession of ammunition following an investigation into mailbox tampering in Placer County.

Richard Lee Gray, 56, also was charged today in Sacramento with access device fraud, possession of stolen U.S. mail and two counts of destruction of U.S. mail letter boxes, according to a federal Department of Justice news release. Gray is scheduled for arraignment April 17 before U.S. Magistrate Edmund F. Brennan.

According to court documents, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service received several reports of letter box tampering and destruction in the Placer County area. Gray was identified as a person of interest in the case, and authorities searched his residence April 2.

The case resulted from an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Placer County Sheriff's Department, with the assistance of the U.S. Forest Service.
