UPDATE: Man fatally injured in crash at Auburn restaurant identified

Auburn police today identified Bret Montague, 54, of Auburn as the man who died of injuries suffered when a car crashed into an Auburn restaurant Monday.

Montague, who had been pinned under the vehicle, succumbed to his injuries Tuesday night.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. Monday as a 72-year-old woman was attempting to park her car in front of Tio Pepe's restaurant on Washington Street. The driver lost control of the vehicle and it entered the outdoor patio dining area of the restaurant, striking three patrons and trapping Montague under the vehicle.

The Auburn Fire Department responded and extricated the Montague from beneath the car. He was transported to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

Montague's wife and a male friend were also taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released later that day.

Sgt. Rick Hardesty said the crash remains under investigation.
