Sacramento sheriff's deputies investigating homicide in Fruitridge area

Sacramento County sheriff's deputies are investigating the fatal shooting of a young man in the Fruitridge area this afternoon.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., a caller reported a man had been shot in the area of E. Nichols Avenue and 16th Avenue, said sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos. Subsequent 911 calls reported shots heard in the area.

Deputies found a man lying on the sidewalk on the west side of E. Nichols Avenue, south of 16th Avenue, next to a parked car, Ramos said. The car's front passenger door was open, and the windows on the driver's side had been shot out.

The man, in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ramos said witnesses reported a car speeding from the area, but they do not yet have a description.

Detectives are not sure whether the victim was alone or whether another person was with him and fled.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Sheriff's Department at (916) 874-5115 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP.
